Onboard Glow drivers

Onboard Glow drivers

Postby Chris Brew » Tue Sep 24, 2013 9:05 pm

I'm having some trouble with the RCV91cd in my Super Chipmonk stopping mid flight, usually after performing a stall turn. I've spent sometime playing around with fuel mixtures, glow plugs etc and I think I have got things as best as I can. I can get around 4 flights without a dead stick and then on the 5th the motor stops. I have had a couple of close ones were I have been very lucky to get the model back in one piece.
I think fitting an on-board glow driver will help, I am looking for a set and forget type that comes on at low throttle settings. I am running a Sullivan type in another model and this works fine, the trouble with this type is you do need access to the driver to turn it on and off but this is not really possible in the Chipmonk I have looked at the Just engines driver http://www.justengines.co.uk/acatalog/On_Board_Glow.html works out quite expensive.
I have also looked at the MPI driver http://www.maxxprod.com/mpi/mpi-20.html seems a bit complicated.
What are others using does anyone have any good recommendations.
Thanks Chris

The cheap glow driver (USD4.81) from HK, is OK, but you need to provide a more reliable and stable plug clip. I modified a split pin so that it clips tightly over the plug head.
See http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... 5V_3A.html
I also modified mine so as to reduce the output to about 1.2- 1.3 volts, that's enough to just keep the plug a very dull red, which is enough. It certainly does make a difference to the dead-stick landing events!

It has no switch, but you could combine it with a remote on-off switch (USD 7.14) that is wired in parallel with your throttle servo. It will then come on at about 50% of the throttle stick. See http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... witch.html

I spent some time mucking around with onboard batts, rc switches etc, and created more issues. Eventually settled on a switchglo pro, was pretty happy with it, but isn't the cheapest option. http://switchglo.com/index.html

Thanks Barry I will look into that. Dale it looks to me that the switch glow only works on low throttle setting if you can mix it on your TX

Hi Chris...Hope I'm on the topic here. I have an inverted ASP 120 FS in a 64" wingspan Sea Fury and don't have any need for an onboard glow and have never had any problems using the glow stick. Have to remember to take it off sometimes . Someone suggested I boost the Nitro level up to 20% and that seems to work okay.
